横田基地に所属する4名の空軍兵が、7月26日午前0時34分ごろ、立川市富士見町において、酒気帯び状態で運転中に事故に遭ったとされています。うち空軍兵一名が、怪我のため地元の病院に運ばれ手当てを受けましたが、容体は安定しています。他に怪我人はなく、本件は現在調査中です。
横田基地は飲酒運転を重大に受け止めています。横田基地では、新たに着任するメンバーが直ちに日本の防衛における重要な役割や、地域の住民との関係の重要性について説明を受けるだけでなく、安全の重要性と、空軍を代表する者として何が求められるかについても説明されます。ライトスタート（新たに着任するメンバーに対するオリエンテーション）、ファーストタームエアマンコース（新任空軍兵への必須初頭教育プログラム）、コマンダーズコール（空輸航空団司令官、群司令官、ならびに中隊長が、空軍兵を招集して行う集会）や、連休前に行う安全に関するブリーフィングの場で、節度ある飲酒の説明を行います。それらのブリーフィングでは、計画と賢明な判断の重要性を強調し、自分の行動がどのような結果を招くか理解させます。米空軍では長い間、飲酒運転を絶対に許さない方針をとってきました。法律を破った者には厳しい懲戒処分が与えられます。我々の規則に従い、飲酒運転を行う者には、運転免許停止もしくは取り消しの処分が与えられます。

Four Airmen assigned to Yokota Air Base were involved in a major vehicle accident while allegedly under the influence of alcohol in Fujimi, Tachikawa, at approximately 12:34 a.m. on 26 July 2020. One Airman was injured and taken to a local hospital for treatment and is in stable condition. No other injuries occurred and the incident is still under investigation.
Yokota Air Base takes driving under the influence very seriously. From the moment a member arrives to Yokota Air Base, they are not only briefed about their critical role in the defense of Japan and our important relationship with our community members, but also the importance of safety and what is expected of them as representatives of the U.S. Air Force. They are briefed on responsible drinking during Right Start, at the First Term Airman Course, during Wing, Group, and Squadron commander's calls in addition to receiving safety briefings before long holidays. The briefings stress the importance of having a plan, making smart decisions and ensuring our members understand the consequences of their actions. The Air Force has a long-established zero tolerance policy in respect to driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol. Violations of the law are treated with severe disciplinary measures. Under our regulations, members who drive under the influence have their driving privileges suspended or revoked.
